Another brief comment on my grandfather and the Great Depression: He came from Scotland as an orphan in the 1880s, and by the 1910s-1920s, he was earning $70,000 a year, in THOSE dollars, which would be a million today, not even considering the lower tax rates of that era. When the Depression hit, my grandfather assumed all of the profilgate debts of his business partner (in those days, the laws of partnership were not what they are today)and it took him until 1951 to pay off and clear HIS PARTNER'S pers...... more

MaryAnne: I hope you're not thinking I was being alarmist. Panicked, maybe, until I re-read your comments and appreciating that you have had it much harder than me. Your advice is rock solid. Let's not allow EVIL to get the upper hand, to get control of our destiny. Bill Withers sang, "we all need somebody to lean on". Well yes, in the worldly sense it's probably true. But in the spritual sense, the answer is already plainly there, in front of our faces. If I "lean on" you for strength in these h...... more

Thanks, MaryAnne, for your perceptive reply. Notes on your comments (and I'm using your point-by-point system): 1) You taught history? That's very cool, something we never knew about you, and it also explains how you could "ace" those old-timey songs like an expert. Some of those songs have been lost/forgotten to history, and you gave them a new life for another generation of listeners. Most of us are heartbroken that your works--the most amazing 18 months of any song stylist in history -- were remove...... more

I don't have any idea about local and regional economies, but here on the West Coast, it sucks. Worse than 1932. I went to a local shopping mall with a visitor from France this past weekend. The place was deserted at 1PM on a Sunday. Many of the store fronts were vacant. Out in the parking lot, I was accosted by three people begging for money, and they didn't appear like the typical panhandlers; these were decent people who were starving. 70 per cent of the home sales in my neck of the woods are for...... more

Bill, thanks for your reply. I'm a little like the parent who says, "do as I say, not as I do". So what do kids do when they hear that? Also, I've always taken precautions about many things. I have the best firewalls and anti-virus programs available. MaryAnne uses a Mac, so she's not prone to the viruses which many PC users are subject to. I may be reckless but I'm not stupid. I guess it boils down to what level of tolerance you have for exposing yourself to problems. I don't mind taking risks f...... more

Bill: Thanks for your message. I love you in this communion for Christ and also in this community for Ysabella Brave. I didn't get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, and I wasn't being annoyed with anyone. I was just being critical. PEGGY MARCH, "I Will Follow Him", Japanese version (1963) I first knew this song from the Spanish version in 1964. I was in Mexico City at the time. @Billy the Kid: "I Will Follow Him" is not Petula Clark, although she might have covered it. It was "Little Peggy" March, from Lansdale (Pennsylvania) Catholic High School, and my best friend's older brother dated her, when they both were about 15 and before she recorded that song. The lyrics are very clever. If you're not paying attention, it sounds like any '60s teenage singer, gushing for her boyfriend. Since yesterday I have received generic e-mail messages from 4 or 5 people on this forum who are close to me, saying that they are "following" me. I know that term from Facebook and Twitter, but on Ysabella Brave? What's going on? I've got enough social networking sites already. I just dumped Twitter. BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA! Ahem. Clam, this is briliant as always, but I'll never get to level B-10 in your scenario. I'm about a level B-6, somewhere between super-devoted and total cuckoo. Your prose is so laboriously and perfectly constructed: I'm sure you spent many hours on this message. You are a delight to read! I knew after one year that I didn't marry the right person. Nor did she. But we have stuck it out for 37 years, no children, at times in passionate love and other times not. Long term marriage is a lot more complicated than this essay, but the wisdom is universal. We certainly have worked at it, but now it's just something undefined, as in having your entire adult lives attached to one another like Siamese twins.... more

All well and good to celebrate YB's birthday, but let's not mention that it's the T-H-I-R-T-I-E-T-H, OK? YB's cats will be listening. A 30th birthday is a millstone, not a milestone. Some people freak out on their 30th birthday. I spent mine on LSD with Timothy Leary (honest:really). Others go bezonkers on their 40th. I have one friend who will turn 80 next week, and he's apoplectic. A birthday is a cause for celebration and community sharing, not a reminder of mortality. I look forward to some ...... more

    Bob,
After reading the following article at snopes.com, I got an inkling of how issues with copyright infringement might be amicably (or at least, arbitrarily) resolved. If fair use allows copyright protected content to be sung to family and friends in a non-public setting, maybe a youtube user could post any videos in question as private videos (only viewable by people who have signed up as "friends"). I don't know for sure that private videos can be viewed by all friends generically, or if they have to be added individually, one-by-one (what a pain!). I will have to do some research and experimenting - but it would seem to be in youtube's interest to allow this. After all, how much of youtube's content do you suppose is cover songs?

    Bob,
I found a little more info about DMCA takedowns this evening. Apparently, the content distributor (e.g., youtube) is not allowed to divulge the identity of a person who initiates a DMCA takedown notice to the person alleged to have infringed on a copyright. If the person whose content is taken down wishes to file a counter takedown notice, he/she must provide name, street address and telephone number, which the content distributor is required to provide to the person who alleged that a copyright was infringed. Basically, if you are accused, you can either fight for your rights, or keep your anonymity. The article, from Electronic Frontier Foundation, is at:

Bob, the jist of my messages to you was that I would start posting personal messages in people's guest books on this website, asking support for the Bella Blitz. I started with 13 people over the last 2 days. It is slow going, so do you have any time or talent to speed this up any? Or is this the wrong approach?

Yes I think my screen name has created some confusion amongst others as well as I'll have people attempt to speak to me in Spanish. It is unfortunate that I did not learn it well in the time I was to study it in High School, one day I hope to learn a language other than English, although in the end I could probably live without it. At the moment there are more important matters I'm likely to have to deal with that would certainly get in the way of such studies, although if you like I could perhaps practice speaking Spanish with you, it might take some patients on both our parts however. Thank you for the kind welcome, I've enjoyed my stay on this site so far.

I hope to add what I can to the community, and that everything this place stands for helps to achieve positive transformations in the world that we cannot yet imagine.

    Peace and freedom to all,
    Alexander

    Greetings:

A belated happy birthday. Thank you for the welcome and the response to my little romp re the “Favorite” question. I have been lurking on the Ysabella Brave website and YouTube for close to a year now, so I knew about you through your various postings and local site.

I discovered Ysabella Brave in late 2007 while researching “Moon River,” as mentioned. I write at length about it in my blog at http://clamchucker.blogspot.com. I have inserted hyperlinks into the text there which will take you to my YouTube channel, as well as Ysabella Brave’s two channels (among others).

My YouTube channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/Clamchucker. I lurked until I actually joined YouTube. Since I am not a videographer, I felt obligated to explain why I would join an organization that specializes in video uploads, so I opened the blog for that purpose.

I have not heard Ian Whitcomb for at least 30 years. He actually used to get airplay on our local New York Pacifica radio station (listener supported), WBAI FM. I do not know if you are in range of either of Pacifica’s California FM stations. I recall his version of “Washing Dishes with my Sweetie.” It was a lovely little novelty song originally by the Ted Weems Orchestra, featuring saxophonist/clarinetist Parker Gibbs doing his usual magnificent down home style vocal work.

I also enjoy the American Songbook, among many other styles, so the other tunes you mentioned are right up there. YouTube is a fabulous source for just about any form of music. I sometimes play “Stump YouTube,” trying to find something they do not have.

Sorry to hear about the camera. Matsushita makes fair equipment. I would consider replacing it with Canon, Nikon, or Olympus. You will find higher quality there, although we both know the Kodak Easyshare Z760 seems to do a great job.

Again, thank you for the cordial greeting. I look forward to corresponding in the future.

    Your pal,

    Clamchucker
